Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats does ConvertCalm support?

ConvertCalm supports over 500 image formats for import and processing, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, GIF, SVG, and RAW photo formats. You can convert to WebP, HEIC, AVIF, JPEG, PNG, or keep the original format.

Does ConvertCalm upload my photos or videos to the cloud?

No. ConvertCalm is a 100% local-first macOS app. All compression, quality calculations, metadata stripping, and format conversions, for both images and video/audio, take place offline directly on your Mac using native hardware acceleration.

How does the quality slider affect file size and visual fidelity?

The quality slider controls lossy compression intensity (from 10% to 100%). At 75%-85%, you get an optimal balance of up to 90% size reduction with zero visible quality loss. At 95%-100%, you get archival near-lossless output.

Where are optimized images saved?

By default, ConvertCalm creates an “Optimized” subfolder next to your original files. In Settings, you can also select any custom destination folder on your Mac or export to the same directory with a custom suffix.

How does the 64-bit duplicate photo detector work?

The Duplicate Detector scans images in your queue using 64-bit perceptual visual hashing (dHash). It calculates visual similarity percentage so you can find exact or near-duplicate photos and clean them up safely.

What video and audio formats does ConvertCalm 2.1 support?

The new Video & Audio Studio converts and compresses MOV, MP4 (H.264 & HEVC/H.265), MKV, AVI, and WebM, with hardware-accelerated encoding on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. You can also extract pure audio to M4A in one click.

How does the video trimmer work?

Open any video in the Video & Audio Studio and drag the In and Out points on the timeline for a real-time visual preview. Trim before exporting to your target format, or turn the trimmed clip directly into an animated GIF.

Can I mute a video’s audio or extract just the audio track?

Yes. With one click you can remove a video’s audio track entirely (great for social clips and tutorials) or extract the audio as a high-fidelity M4A file, without re-encoding the video.

What are the Social Media & Web presets?

1-click recipes sized for the platforms you post to most: Instagram Reels/TikTok (1080×1920), Instagram Feed Portrait (1080×1350), YouTube Thumbnails (1280×720 WebP), OpenGraph/Twitter Cards (1200×630), a Favicon Suite (32×32), and Archival Lossless (PNG/WebP 100%).

Can I automate ConvertCalm with Shortcuts or Finder?

Yes. ConvertCalm supports native Finder Quick Actions and the macOS Shortcuts app via AppIntents (macOS 14+), plus a convertcalm:// URL scheme for scripting, all processed locally on your Mac.

Why ConvertCalm is the media converter Mac users keep

Images, video, and audio in one app

Most Mac converters do one job. ConvertCalm batch-converts images (PNG, JPEG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, SVG, GIF, RAW) and, since version 2.1, video and audio too (MP4 with H.264 or HEVC, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, and M4A extraction), without a second tool or a web uploader.

Hardware acceleration, not a spinning beach ball

Encoding runs on Apple's own VideoToolbox and CoreGraphics frameworks, so an M1 through M4 Mac (or an Intel one) uses its dedicated media engine instead of the CPU. Hundreds of photos convert in parallel, and WebP or AVIF output cuts up to 90% of the file size with no visible loss.

Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is tracked

There is no cloud queue and no account. Every conversion, trim, GIF, EXIF strip, and duplicate scan happens on your Mac, offline. The Privacy Shield can also remove GPS coordinates, camera model, and timestamps from files before you share them.
